Norman Butler runs the Bath half marathon for SMASH, dressed as a giant pink fairy!
“It was an amazing day and at points if I am to be honest quite overwhelming in terms of the support both before and during the race. Before - people wanting photos and to know who I was running for so that really helped spread the word. During - it really did feel like the whole of the Bath Crowd on route was cheering for the “Big Pink Fairy” - the words of support from all ages was amazing. It got to a point on the second lap where the crowds could see me coming they would all start cheering. I never had time to think about my strategy during the race. They really did seem to appreciate the effort that went in. At least I hope so.Small children were fascinated (trying to work out if I really was a fairy or a man!), groups of students/teenagers found it highly amusing and really gave me a lot of encouragement, guys were impressed by my shapely (40DD) figure and took the chance to a have a joke or two, fellow runners asking how I was doing. Being able to interact with everyone helped promote the cause. The day really turned out to be quite hot (a few runners did struggle) and wearing the wig the whole way round was not a good move but I didn’t want to let anyone down. I thought the approach might get some attention but never did I think it would provoke such a response but I am a glad as it really has made it more worthwhile by bringing a smile to a few peoples faces and at the end of the day I hope at least a couple of more people are aware of SMASH and the good work you do. ”
